Audiobooks for kids can be very hit or miss. Sometimes they drone on. Sometimes the audio quality is iffy. We often cannot get through the first ten minutes of a low-effort audiobook.
We did, however, finish these titles last year. I check all my books out through Hoopla at the library, but Amazon sells them, too:
Little House in the Big Woods and Little House on the Prairie
A big chunk of the charm with these is the fiddle music by Paul Woodiel. Cherry Jones does a fine job with doing the voices. They’re very well produced.
We will likely listen to Farmer Boy this summer.
If you have any interest in the fiddle music mentioned in Little House, The Pa’s Fiddle Project has three albums available on Spotify.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
There are quite a few audiobooks for Oz, including an Amazon production with Anne Hathaway.
We listened to the Shelby Young narrated version from Harper, and it really is just fantastic. If you’re ever going to try classic lit with your kids in the car, I cannot recommend this one enough. It’s engaging. She does voices and funny accents, it moves at a quick pace, and Young is just very talented.
The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place Series:
The Mysterious Howling and The Hidden Gallery
I suggested these to my 8 year old, because we learned about the legend of Romulus and Remus this year in the CKLA curriculum. Children raised by wolves were already a big discussion at my house.
If you are interested in classical education, these books are fantastic. They are about a governess who has been hired to educate three feral wolfish children found outside of a country manor. The vocabulary is challenging, but often explained in context. They mention all sorts poetry and art. They audioboook is full of howls, and Maryrose Wood is often very funny. Plus, there’s a mystery to solve!
We will probably spend the rest of the winter and spring finishing the Incorrigibles.
Please let me know if you have any reccomendations for kid’s audiobooks!
I'm not one for audio books as I've resisted them but listening to one this year is a goal of mine. Perhaps easing into with children's books is the answer to my resistance? My daughter and I loved reading The Incorrigible Children series when she was young.
We love the Cherry Jones Little House books, too. If you are feeling ambitious/have a long roadtrip at some point, Richard Armitage's reading of David Copperfield is so good. My other favorites maybe are a little young for your kids now: Stephen Fry's Paddingtons, Peter Dennis reading the Pooh books, and Charlotte's Web read by E.B. White himself.
